Ring in the New Year: Our 2024 Home Improvement Trends

Ring in the New Year: Our 2024 Home Improvement Trends

As we move into 2024, many of us want to bring a fresh start to some aspect of our lives. This can be in the form of a physical fitness change, a career goal, or what we at RessaBuilt are most passionate about, a home improvement project. While you may already have a good idea of what you are trying to accomplish, let us put forth some ideas that will help you brainstorm if you are still undecided about your project. We think that some of the following trends will be extremely popular in many homeowners’ projects in 2024.

1. One space, many uses

When added square footage is not possible, along with the desire to conserve financial resources, the creation of multi-functional spaces in your home is a great way to maximize the versatility that your home naturally has. While some may cringe at the idea of an office doubling as a playroom, try to think a bit more outside of the box. Most any room in your home can be somehow utilized for multiple functions. Areas such as hallways or mudrooms can have added storage installed which will free up other areas of your home. Additionally, the multi-use spaces don’t have to have dramatically different uses. An arts and crafts room/playroom could also serve as a home gym which creates less disruption of the space between the two different uses. An outdoor covered patio with some small tweaks can double as a prep kitchen during the warmer months. There are so many possibilities that can be considered!

2. Wild weather

With what seems to be an increase in dramatic weather events over the recent past, many are looking to add modifications to their homes that help when natural disasters strike. One of the biggest inconveniences encountered is when power is lost. A pretty much foolproof method to avoid this is by the installation of a generator or solar panels with power storage capability. Not only can solar panels gain you a tax deduction, but they can also help reduce electricity consumption which is a great way to help the environment. Other than solar panels, many have included other “green” assets in their homes. For instance, low-flow fixtures, water-efficient appliances, and tankless water heaters are all other great ways to have a positive effect on the planet.

3. All under one roof

As the housing market has become bleak due to the extreme rise in interest rates, the decision many have made is to put off a home purchase until a later date. This has resulted in many families consolidating under one roof until there is a better time to engage the market. Grown children are moving back in with their parents and grandparents are moving in with their grown children. (The previous recommendation of having a backup electric supply is especially important as many older individuals with electric medical devices cannot afford to go without power.) If this is something that may be affecting you, there are most likely steps that need to be taken to prepare your home for the change. For easy access to a basement converted into an apartment, for example, a separate entrance can limit the change/intrusion for the rest of the home. Extra storage is always helpful so any unused space can be outfitted with built-ins or cabinetry to keep clutter to a minimum. If small children are present in the home, a dedicated playroom is a must in order to keep the sanity of the older generation also living there.

4. Age with grace and be safe

As the baby boomer generation moves into the golden years, 2024 is the time when many will need to make adjustments to their home in order to make the transition comfortable and safe. Specifically, we want to focus on the bathroom. To minimize falls, a no-threshold shower and walk-in bathtub are great options to improve the safety of the space. Two other therapeutic options relating to both assets would be a soaking tub and the shower have the ability to turn into a steam room. What is most important though is to truly consider what is going to make your life safer and more comfortable as the years progress.

5. Beauty in the details

The final trend we see forthcoming in the new year has more to do with aesthetics as opposed to the functionality and livability of your home. A couple of stylistic trends that we anticipate being very popular both have to do with the walls in your home. Stylized backsplashes with textured tile have become a go-to for many embarking on a kitchen renovation. Textured and unique tile in general we have seen used a great deal to enhance spaces by adding an eye-catching element to what could be a boring painted wall. Another method to enhance walls has been with wall paneling. Used in the past mostly for insulation, now, wall panels are used to bring style and coziness to a space. The texture, like with the tile, makes the room feel more “alive” and “organic” truly creating a space that is its own.

Hopefully, some of these ideas will get you started in planning your home upgrades for 2024. Let us know in the comments what other trends you think will be popular in 2024!
